You Can’t Spell Man Without: A Love for Scripture by Travis Evans

Not to pursue our joy every day in the Word of God is to abandon the revealed will of God. It is sin. – John Piper, Desiring God, p. 152

How do you cultivate what you love? Immerse yourself in it. If you love football more than anything, do you not watch it? Study facts? Read magazines? Play it? I hope to point you and myself to passionately, fervently love Scripture. Truly, the Bible is filled with holy words. We should not treat it lightly.

Memorize! Memorize! Memorize! Memorization takes time. It takes meditating on the verse(s). It means dwelling on the verse(s).

Read Psalm 119. Yep, the whole thing.

It is your life. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4) Read it. Whether you can “eat” a little or a lot, “eat” it. Just take it in daily.

Pray. Scripture is blank without the Holy Spirit. It won’t make sense and you won’t love it. The Holy Spirit creates the desires of loving it. Pray that the Holy Spirit would make Scripture alive to you and that you would hang on every word, loving every verse.

Men of history. Read about the apostle Paul. Read about Martin Luther. Read about George Müller. Read about Jonathan Edwards. Read how these men loved Scripture.

Wow, Travis. Thanks so much for referencing John Piper’s excerpt on “Why Memorize Scripture”. I found it succinct, and extremely encouraging. When I can read an article and it helps me to see the value of God’s word and a desire to put it to memory, it’s been a worthwhile read!
