In the second part of this post, let’s look at what God in scripture has informed us what should be our battle gear, as we respond to the call to arms.

Ephesians 6:10-20

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.  Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.  For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.  Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.  Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,  and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.  In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;  and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,  praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel,  for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

While we could go many directions and also cover a lot of ground here, for the sake of brevity, let’s look at one.

While all of this armor is essential for a warrior to be equipped well, their placement and purpose is telling.

In particular, the helmet is called the helmet of salvation. This helmet guards our head, it protects us from fatal blows. I submit that this helmet is the gospel of Jesus Christ. Men, if we are to stand, we have to remember that God is the one who saves, and it is He who keeps us.

Let your heart take courage in the fact that, though your faith be small, the object of your faith is what matters. This awesome and great and all-powerful God saves, and none can snatch from His hands.

Let this truth, that if you have repented of your sins, forsaken your “righteousness” and in turn trust in Christ’s, this helmet is covering your head from the fatal blows that Satan would seek to attack you with. Whether your arm be strong (or feeble) or your heart full of courage (or timid) let the helmet of salvation that covers you encourage your faith as you battle your flesh and Satan.
